May. 1st, 2005 10:24 amIt's rainy and M. is working brunch shift and I'd really rather curl up and watch my download of Dalek again, but I'm going to church because they're doing a workshop on Living Wills that I think sounds rather important. But I am going to be Very Late.
Doctor Who, how do I love thee? We downloaded Dalek overnight and I was tremendously cruel to M. who was racing to get out the door, and watched it anyway. ( Read more... )
Note to all who are comparing Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy to the book and the old UK tv version -- don't forget the *actual* original version, which was the first BBC radio play. Which gave you, among other things, the joy of Simon Jones as Arthur Dent without the bad mechanical Zaphod head that never worked properly. We planned to go yesterday, but M.'s insomnia had flared up his first week of work and he was exhausted, so I made him cook for me instead and we're going next week.
I did see The Interpreter on Thursday, with a friend. An above-average thriller, and we agreed that even though the main character is a white African it was saved from falling entirely into the White Guy Movie pattern (you know, White Guy engages in probably doomed defense of Vibrant NonWhite Culture against Other White Guys, as in Dances With Wolves, Last Samaurai, Cry Freedom, Mississippi Burning; can the Vibrant NonWhite Culture never be allowed by Hollywood to represent itself?) by the character's actually being *from* Africa and identifying as African. Though mostly I was suffering from apartment lust. Nicole Kidman's character lives on Stuyvesant Street near St. Mark's Church, right next to that amazing corner building -- you know the one at the "V" of Stuyvesant and East 10th Streets? I have always been fascinated by that block and wanted to rewrite the movie so that at the end she sublets her apartment to me.
