From the time I started, in 2013, 'til last summer, Yuletide (and then some Agent Carter fests) was the only time I wrote fanfic. Last summer I rediscovered my old Alias Smith & Jones fic, started re-editing and reposting it, and started writing more. I've written a little in other fandoms outside of the fests -- a Luke Cage followup (feat. Jessica Jones) and a random Deadwood story and maybe a Peggy or so that wasn't connected. But mostly ASJ, and mostly offshoots of the particular series I began back in the 90s. It is a very small fandom so I'm not talking about an audience of thousands, or hundreds, but maybe I get a hundred hits on things, eventually.
What I can say is that the original characters are beloved by a number of readers, and that's not nothing, considering the usual attitude towards . . . well, OFCs, particularly, though I have a whole set of OCs, F and M. (Apparently when I was inactive in the fandom, in the 00s, someone actually used my primary Original Female Character's name as her screenname on the boards, so that's like Making It, right?)
So now that I'm thinking of reworking some of the stories to go pro, I'm going to have to take them down and I'm finding it hurts. I love these characters. But don't want to give up the opportunity I have here.
I'm trying to decide if it would be okay to just lock the stories down to AO3 users only, rather than removing them altogether. There's also a small fandom based fic board (not updated much but there are still active monthly challenges there) where one of the women who's gone pro still has her stories up. I could put them there instead, out of sight but accessible to those who really want them. (She's the one who publishes with the place that put out the Women of Destiny call that I want to submit for, so if she's doing it.) But is that legit, even? Also it would involve reformatting everything yet again, and I spent six months of my 2017 doing that to get them onto AO3.
Yuletide: So last year my primary fandom had one other request; we weren't matched and I was thinking about a treat, but the requestor was very specific about her DNWs and meanwhile I was discovering an enthusiastic audience for what I do in that fandom, so it didn't feel worth it. I've had a great experience writing Bletchley Circle, twice -- my most kudosed stories ever -- but have not paid for Britbox to see the new Bletchley Circle San Francisco so I feel a bit disqualified, especially since my two stories were moving in a similar direction. Definitely offering Deadwood, which I wrote as a treat last year. (My second Deadwood story of 2017, and with the movie almost definitely happening now, I am pretty sure that fandom will revive a bit.) Hoping for Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, the Defenders. I guess I'll need to nominate. I'm such the Yuletide amateur.
