The weekend started out with a lovely Sean Bean squeefest with
queenofthorns and
linaerys, which was tremendous fun. It also involved watching watching *When Saturday Comes*, a fairly mediocre movie which fit both the North of England Workingman Overcomes Obstacles and His Own Self-Sabotaging Behavior to Hit the Big Time Movie and Classic Sports Movie profiles, but was lifted above the mediocre script by a) Sean Bean being charming, b) Sean Bean being naked, with both a hottub full of his football team and with Emily Lloyd, and c) Pete Postlethwaite, who was disturbingly nice in this role. And it involved us waving pictures of Ben Browder in leather trousers in front of
linaerys in order to entice her to watch *Farscape*.
It also ended well, with a surprise dinner with
menikoff and her parents. In between, I mostly finished the Atkins index. Bleah. I found myself eating more carbs than I ordinarily would just in defiance.
Yesterday I was lazy and watched lots of *Alias*. I am getting more and more addicted to the ongoing story; I finally recognized an episode I'd seen when aired and no wonder I hadn't a clue what's going on. I'm starting to like Sydney more and I'm fascinated as her dad is starting to let some of his feelings leak through. It's hard, though, having seen some of third season, to watch Francie and Will and known things will End Badly (or Semi-Badly, for Will) for them.
*Deadwood* just gets better and better; currently I'm on edge for the poor preacher; my understanding of the medical science of the time suggests brain tumors were most likely inoperable in those days (or the chances of cutting out bits he would need, or dying of infection afterwards would reduce any operation to Not Worth Trying). As
queenofthorns said, the best scene was Seth and Saul walking him back to his tent afterwards. I'm more and more charmed by some of the characters -- Jeffrey Jones and his attempt at forming a club, because that's the sort of thing One Does; the budding friendship between *uh, that guy, Wild Bill's friend* and Joanie; etc. Interesting look at the relationship with the Chinese community this week--the balance between racism and a healthy respect for that the leader of the Chinese there has. (And that would have been a much less awkward sentence if I could remember his name. *sigh*
*Sopranos* . . . Adrianna!!!! It's not that it hasn't been clear she's doomed all season, but they still surprised me the way it was carried out. Chris, attacking her, then planning a new life with her, then turning on her. Tony, butter wouldn't have melted in his mouth; I actually believed Chris had attempted suicide, he made it sound so plausible. And Silvio, not usually the most brutal of Tony's guys, doing the deed. (Someone I always pictured Chris himself pulling the trigger, in anger, or else Paulie Walnuts, who's always struck me as being more the killer of the group.) One of the main problems with this season has been that they seem to be marking time; Tony B. was a good idea but it hasn't been played out as well as it might, ditto for the Johnny Sack/Little Carmine plot -- though that may have just let all hell loose for Tony. I'd thought this was going to be the final season; now that there's going to be one more, it seems like they've been postponing the inevitable and just spinning things out all season. Plus, not enough of certain minor characters. Said Paulie Walnuts, for example, who really seemed to be losing it last season. And they seem to have forgotten about Uncle Junior lately.
Spent part of the day in the NY Public Library -- lovely space and easy to be productive there; picked up ROTK at Best Buy on the way home; my next couple of freelance projects are already here and I'm gearing up for them.

Date: 2004-05-25 05:56 pm (UTC)*squee* I have it on DVD! So much Sean
nekid buttgoodness. And it's Sheffield United!Of course, Sheffield United are stuck in Division one right now. If only we had a RL Sean Bean look-alike Jimmy Muir...

Date: 2004-05-26 07:57 am (UTC)It was directed by a woman, which explains an awful lot about the NekkidSeanGoodness. May have to buy my own copy of the DVD, myself, next time I order from Amazon.co.uk -- though that list gets longer and longer . . .
Agreed -- the complete failure to bring Antonia back into things once he's settled down with Lucille, if not sooner, is really unforgivable. I guess the idea is that Teresa's relatives have raised her to fit into that society, and she doesn't need some random English parent coming around . . . but it doesn't work. A lot of Cornwell's writings about women, family, etc. don't work for me -- I've been reading some of the books (mostly the first set) and I was shocked to see that a lot of the interpretations and additions of women characters in the movies were actually *improvements* Eep.
Haven't found much "Antonia goes to find Sharpe" fic (mostly because most of the fic seems to either be slash or deal with Jane, etc.); that may be one of my plotbunnies as well, but I've got a few more of the books to read first.

*Deadwood* just gets better and better
it DOES! Though I can't help expecting Swearingen to give estimated values on the furniture. Lovejoy, the crookedest man in Deadwood :-) But you know, Al has a mushy marshmellow center....way WAY down deep.
currently I'm on edge for the poor preacher; my understanding of the medical science of the time suggests brain tumors were most likely inoperable in those days (or the chances of cutting out bits he would need, or dying of infection afterwards would reduce any operation to Not Worth Trying).
I suspect that if there WERE something reasonable to try, the Doc would do it. I like the Doc an awful lot.
I'm more and more charmed by some of the characters -- Jeffrey Jones and his attempt at forming a club
The Ambulators! Hey, they could have cool jackets and cruise the main street and...wait. I think that's the Sharks and Jets. Never mind
the budding friendship between *uh, that guy, Wild Bill's friend* and Joanie; etc.
Charlie Utter - Dayton Callie who plays Charlie is fab!He was pretty involved in Vengeance Unlimited long ago and far away
Interesting look at the relationship with the Chinese community this week--the balance between racism and a healthy respect for that the leader of the Chinese there has. (And that would have been a much less awkward sentence if I could remember his name. *sigh*
Wu. And was it just me or did anyone else get the distinct impression that Wu may not be QUITE as on top of his people as Al thinks. They looked slightly -- disgruntled...edging on revolutionary

Date: 2004-05-26 08:01 am (UTC)M.'s got that same Lovejoy-dissonance; I confess I never watched it, though it sounds great fun. I thought it was interesting that they made a big deal of calling Swearingen a "limey bastard" in the first few eps when he seems to be doing a pretty straight American accent. Of course, Saul doesn't sound like he's from Vienna, either.
Hmmm, well the "white" portion of the camp sounds like it may be ready to stir itself against either Swearingen or Wu; it would be interesting if Wu's leadership did falter.
I can't believe there's only one more ep. this season. THere's so much that needs to happen. (As opposed to Sopranos, where they've been marking time and finally got around to having a good ep. this week.)

Date: 2004-05-26 12:36 pm (UTC)Now, about this Angel tape: I can meet up with you at lunchtime on Thursday, or do a streetcorner handoff/quick coffee at work-ending time on Friday, if either of those works.

Date: 2004-05-28 08:43 pm (UTC)And Jack-and-Sydney is definitely one of the best parts. When T was watching and I wasn't, the development of their relationship was what he called me to rave about most often (sometimes I think he would pretend I watched the show, just so he could enthuse over some great scene or another).
And yes, it does make better sense when you see all the episodes in order - one of the reasons why the show does just dreadfully in first-run reruns, because it's not the kind of story a casual viewer can just tune in to (though it's due to be syndicated on TNT and Fox, at which time they hopefully will run the episodes in order). They tried to "dumb it down" in an effort to change this aspect somewhat with the third season - which is why you hadn't a clue what went on and eventually gave up this year. As one fan wrote on the message boards, they'd never seen anything like this season, which managed to be both incredibly complicated and dumb in the same shot. But they hired Jeff Bell and Drew Goddard for the next season, so hopefully they will shine the new season up. I have high hopes for Bell (who is due to become executive producer in the fifth season), and he better not let me down (she says darkly).
I have the special Entertainment Weekly annual issue that is all LoTR, and I'm saving it for you and Martin. Came in mint condition from T.

Date: 2004-05-29 02:48 pm (UTC)I gave up mostly because they kept preempting it, and then we were so excited about the Sopranos being back on. Of course, then it turned out not to be that amazing this season, and after awhile, M.'s schedule settled down so that he was watching them on Mondays anyway, but by then I had lost track of this season on Alias. (So I would love to borrow the tapes so I can be caught up by the fall. Since I think my only other show that's coming back is Deadwood.)
You don't have season 2, do you? I don't have Netflix (and since we've got Movies on Demand on our cable, and a great independent video store a block away, I'm not going to get it at present), and figuring out what it would cost to rent 6 disks at $3.95/per, I might just pick it up secondhand on Amazon.
Sorry to hear that people are disappointed by this season; I never get into a show before it goes downhill -- or is on the verge of cancellation if it doesn't go downhill. *sigh*
So -- WHO RAISED SYDNEY? If her mom died when she was little (I know she really didn't and that this is what season 2 is all about), and she barely knew her dad -- grandparents? a housekeeper? boarding school? foster parents? Francie's parents took her in?
I was amused to finally learn she was doing her grad degree in English. Man. If I'd have known I could have fit in being a superspy and still write A papers, I never would have gotten into the kind of debt I'm in now. Yeah, I could probably have managed to be a superspy and not make much progress on my dissertation, sort of like now, but . . . *g*
BTW, I will definitely loan you Ultraviolet. M. is a pain about loaning, but he just loaned our whole first season of Farscape to the Onion and has lost any rights he might have had. I'll need it back fairly quickly though because I need to loan it to Gwen too. But it's only six hours -- you'll probably watch the whole thing some lazy weekend day.
