Oct. 8th, 2004 08:49 amYesterday was one of those days when my part-time teaching gig felt full-time. First I taught, then I had four student conferences (they just got their papers back and I am strongly encouraging them to come talk to me). Between appointments, I read some of Terry Eagleton's new book on the English Novel (which is, btw, dated 2005 so I am apparently reading it through a time warp). I spent a few hours at the faculty wine tasting talking about classes and the job market with my colleagues (and drinking a lot of lovely Italian Nebbiolos and Barolos), and then hit the Neal Stephenson reading. I now have the entire Baroque cycle signed (and someday I'll actually, you know, *read* them), though Stephenson seems to have lost a lot of his audience. Last time I met up with
bethynyc, met
linaerys and
starroses, and saw my friend J. and one of his friends after. This time, not a soul I knew and maybe 1/3 the crowd. Far from empty, but not the big event the Quicksilver reading was.
Because I had two huge Stephenson hardcovers in my backpack, I didn't bring it into the tasting and left it on my desk. I later discovered my wallet had been looted -- though as they'd left my credit cards and id, all they got was about $7 and a metrocard with $0 left on it, so my least devastating theft ever . . .
still, I shall phone campus security and let them know. It pretty much sucks that our offices aren't safe.
M.'s sleeping the day away (a side effect of the hours he keeps at work), so I'm off to the library to work. That way I don't have to tiptoe around. If I don't get to look at people's journals from a campus terminal, I'll catch up over the weekend, at least.

Date: 2004-10-08 09:22 am (UTC)Hey, I saw a commercial with Neil Gaimon, I didn't know he was so young and cute! Then I thought I saw him waiting to get on the plane to Vancouver.
On a completely different and totally off-the-wall note, when I'm looking in catalogs I'm often struck by items I'd love to buy (if I won the lottery) for people, things that seem to fit them. For some reason, every time I see these tassel dolls, not all of them, just certain eras, I think of you. Have you ever expressed an interest in those sort of things, or the dress of a certain era? I keep saying "Oooo, that would be pretty to send to
Maybe they remind me of you, "long" and slender, and they're dressed all cool-like.

. But I'm glad you still picture me as dressed all cool-like. ;-) (She says, looking down at her Gap jeans and plain knit top . . . )
