Oct. 9th, 2004 06:09 pmIt's so nice to be out of the every-moment-occupied mode; I'm enjoying both the plans and the downtime I can still fit in while still getting done what needs it.
Although I'll be thrilled when M. has a more regular work schedule; planning around his schedule is tricky right now, though he's so tired on his days off it doesn't matter much if I have made plans for them, since he mostly sleeps them away. He's got two days off in a row next week (Wed. and Thurs.) and I'm hoping to get actual Conscious M. by Thursday, maybe out to dinner or at least to add some sorely-needed components to his work wardrobe.
I've celebrated my big freelance project and our relative-non-poverty with a bit of clothes shopping, mostly Anthropologie and Find Outlet -- a plum colored skirt with interesting kickpleats and a brown velvet patterned with piping and buttons, and a pretty silk blouse and a couple of sweaters and a really nifty blazer in a sort of celadon tweed with what I would have called a Voyage look a couple of years ago (some lace and ribbon trim, slightly deconstructed, very pretty). Yup, back to shopaholics' anonymous for me, but I've been extremely restrained of late, and this was my big splash. Although I'm wondering if I made the right decision with the brocade trousers. They're actually terrific looking, but quite a bit funkier than my norm. (Big flares . . . the last pair of big flares I bought I ended up taking to the tailors to turn into boot cut so I'd get more wear out of them . . . )
I've been watching some of the Angel DVDs I'd been collecting; season one and now I'm starting on two. I'm enjoying them a lot because it feels like an old favorite. There's none of that tension and constant reevaluation, and waiting to see how quickly it's going to go downhill. Watching a show on DVD has such different pacing, too. Things that seemed to happen so far apart in broadcast have a completely different feel. Holland Manners died *that* early on? Kate and Angel were only really friends for *that* long? Etc.
Also, I watched Shattered Glass, which had been loaned me with a fairly strong recommendation. It's a good film overall; Peter Sarsgaard and Hank Azaria gave particularly memorable performances. The answer to the "so, can Hayden Christensen act?" question isn't an overwhelmingly positive./ If his performance as Stephen Glass, reporter, can be so much like his performance as Anakin Skywalker, Jedi Knight, I'm not seeing a huge future ahead of him.
Yesterday I got my job letter off to my advisor (joining my c.v.) and I drafted my dissertation summary. I need to look that over again, tonight or maybe tomorrow a.m.
