Productive day on campus leading to lazy afternoon at home.

Ran my c.v. by the prof who's serving as job-search coach. He eviscerated it, but hey, I'm willing to try his way.

Got all my credentials file ducks in a row.

Found some George MacDonald in the library and a Francis Hodgson Burnett at the half-price table in Labyrinth -- possible readings for the Alice class next time around.

Copied some essays for my HSS2 files.

Discovered that although I'd paid tuition, have been using the library, meeting with professors and etc., I somehow seem to have forgotten to register. (Freudian slip, anyone?) Which led to me not having insurance for another day or two, and having to buy a pack of birth control pills at scary full price. But at least it's straightened out.

Am not paying Barnes & Noble to be a member anymore. I pay them to get a 10% discount. Turns out Labyrinth gave me a free membership where every time I spend $100, I get $10 off, and Shakespeare & Co. gives me 20% off with my faculty ID. Not to mention that Morningside Books seems to do 20% off fiction standard. Plus, supporting independent booksellers, yay! Okay, there's some genre fic that's easier to find at B&N, and I'll miss the 10% off on that, but overall between those places and the Strand I can do 90% of my book-shopping.

I have my NYU ID that says "Faculty/Admin/Staff" so I can probably get the discount at Shakespeare & Co, as well, and I go there pretty often! I never knew! Hah! This has me grinning from ear to ear! :D

As for the birth control thing, that IS scary. For a long while after I finished my undergrad and before my job details were finalized, I had no insurance and had to pay full price for a YEAR on the patch - the only birth control medication that really does it for me. So when I finally got insurance again at the beginning of this year, I go to the pharmacy all happy only to find out that the patch isn't covered !In the end, I decided to just go OFF the birth control, for a variety of reasons, the least of which is that I simply can't afford it anymore.

Anyway, I also wanted to ask if you could send me a copy of the Alice syllabus? I'm rather interested in what's on there!

Just look 'em in the eye and say faculty; I'm sure NYU is included. (Cooper actually uses Shakespeare as its bookstore, but I can't imagine . . . )

Do me a favor? Email me at cas47@columbia.edu and remind me about the Alice syllabus. I'm reading comments through email and not logging onto LJ today and I don't want to forget!

I put off getting that B&N card forever so that I wouldn't be motivated to buy books there instead of in indies. (The fact that the only bookstore in my neighborhood is a B&N is, of course, a different story -- but as long as I'm going to Cooper and Columbia regularly, they're both good bookstores neighbhorhoods.) I finally gave in just this last. So I'm not too un-PC.

The test will be when I bring The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror up to the counter at Shakespeare and ask for a faculty discount. How much will I blush? ;-)

I took a Fantasy lit class as an undergrad and loved it. It was taught by my adviser, who also taught the one-semester class I took on Chaucer. (His dissertation was on Chaucer.)

Go for it! :)

Actually, since we're on the topic of birth control, I'm looking for a new gynecologist because I'm really not happy with the one I currently have. Does anyone know a really nice, gentle (both physically and personality-wise) female gynecologist in Manhattan? If so, and you don't want to post their name or number here, email me at SDMathews(at)aol.com. Thanks. :-)

I don't know if anyone reading my entry will read your comments. I can put the word out, though. I use university health services; I used to have a really nice gynecologist named Dr. Beth Shimlock, but I've long ago become totally dependent on the university. You could probably find her in the phone book!
