Jan. 1st, 2005 10:12 amHope everyone had a lovely New Year!
Ours was quiet -- M. has been as sick as I am, but he hasn't had the option to call in sick, so we skipped the parties and ordered in Indian food, watched DVDs, and were in bed before midnight. (And when you consider M. often works until midnight . . . ) The restaurant he's temporarily at is at 43rd just off 7th, so after lunch they literally boarded the place up, it's that close to the ball drop.
Much of the day was affected by the bad news that my friend S. (
kittyjosephine) is in the hospital with a blood clot on her brainstem. Thanks to
partners4life for tracking me down through her f-list and realizing I was a Real Life friend. I spent most of the morning on the phone with friends and by afternoon, everyone who needed to know, knew. I and several other friends got to talk to S. on the phone, and our friend St., who is up in Connecticut where S. is in the hospital near her parents' house, had gone to visit her. (
bethynyc,
linaerys and
seanmoon, if you see this, S. is my friend who came with us to the China Mieville signing.)
Luckily S. is responding well to blood thinners so there will probably not have to be surgery. I've known a couple of other people to go through this and the recover/rehab time is considerable, but S. is much younger than they so fingers crossed for that.
