chelseagirlM. unexpectedly off yesterday (instead of today as expected), and a mention of a suit sale at Rothman's on Union Square got us actually out of the house as a couple for the first time in forever. [To be fair, he is still working 6 days a week, 12-16 hour days, and the opening is next weekend.] He has now expanded his suit wardrobe from 3 to 5 and the whole desperate dash to the drycleaners situation should improve accordingly. We stopped off 'round the corner at the Old Town for a drink on the way home; it reminded me of back when he *wasn't* opening a restaurant and we actually did things together.
His Rothman's plunder was equalled by the gorgeous silk suit I'd just taken off layaway at D/L Cerney, with some special project money. It's an amazing vintage fabric; they only had enough to make up two jackets and three skirts, so it's nearly unique. Between end of season sales and tax-free week, we have both been rather free with the credit cards lately. But soon we'll morph back into our boring, prudent usual selves. (Though speaking of prudent or not-so, we picked out some temporary hair dye at Ricky's. I'm a natural blonde and have never dyed my hair; he thinks it would be fun if I experimented. I have always wanted to try, but I'm nervous that it will take weeks to wash out, or maybe bond too closely with my hair and I'll have to get it rebleached to my own color. I *was* thinking of getting "chunks" done, something reddish with maybe a slightly plum tint, but I was also going to get my hairdresser involved.)
We rented Shaun of the Dead, which as I predicted, we both loved, as it's both funny as hell and hits all the right notes as a sort of horror/comedy/state of England movie. Also Sky Captain, because he's been dying to see it. A shame something that pretty has nothing at the core. To be fair, it's just like the kind of B-movie it pays tribute to -- but it could have been a lot more, if a twentieth as much effort had gone into the story as went into the production. I, uh, kept falling asleep. Watched the end this morning but didn't change my opinion.
Reading (behind on this): Temple of the Golden Pavilion by Yukio Mishima -- kind of like the rest of the Mishima I've read, I admired it but I couldn't really care.
City of Saints and Madmen by Jeff VanderMeer. Wow. Brilliant world-creation, interesting textual games, well worth it. (This is another one China Mieville fans might be interested in; I read about it on his mailing list as well.)
And stuff for school. (Machiavelli, Dante's Purgatorio, book *about* Dante's Purgatorio)
Visited my friend John in the hospital, the one with lung cancer, and the surgery was a resounding success. (It was malignant but hadn't spread, they got everything, and fingers crossed it stays that way.) Now he has to make that quitting smoking thing stick.
Well, as I blew off a superbowl gathering to get some work done, I need to get offline and back into that mode . . .

"Shaun of the Dead" was hilarious. It's so telling about the British in that the place to which the dead feel drawn is the pub!
I saw "Sky Captain" on the plane on the way to England (or maybe from England). On one level, I would say that if its seen at all, it should be on a big screen - since as you said, they spent all their time and money on pretty visuals and none on the plot - but on another level, I'm glad I saw it on a plane because I'm glad I didn't PAY to see it, and because when one is sitting on a plane doing nothing, the film becomes less of a waste of time.
Good luck getting that work done. That's what I should be doing, too.
I'm going to the opera tonight, though. A friend is taking me to some weird modernist thing at the Guggenheim. Who knew they had opera?
