Has anyone heard if the US *is* getting the new Dr. Who anytime? (Now that I've heard that SciFi seems to have turned it down.)
silme tells me the CBC is getting it, but nobody seems to have a US airdate? M., who has been going through a lot lately, and who spent his early childhood hiding behind the couch whenever the Daleks appeared, would really like to see it, and I'd really like to bring him some good news. I would even consider downloading it, if we knew what the episode was called and where to find it. (I promise, we'll buy the DVDs as soon as they come out in the UK. We have a multiregional player. Honest.)
Also . . . I get a lot of cards for student shows, since Cooper is half an art school and half an engineering school. Today there was one from a student whose name was Leela Tegan [Lastname]. Think her parents were Dr. Who fans?

My multiregional was actually a gift (from a wonderfully but absurdly generous friend) -- it's a Sampo and it's worked well for three years now. I'll try to remember to check at home -- my fashion magazine of all places had a listing for one you could buy at Best Buy. And the Kim's Video near Columbia sometimes carries them.

So far, we only have confirmation that the new series has been bought by CBC television in Canada, who air it on Tuesdays at 7pm, starting on April 5, and Prime TV in New Zealand, who have not yet announced an air date. No Australian or US broadcaster has picked up the series yet.
From this site. Now I need to figure out if we can pick up that station.

Date: 2005-03-31 07:09 pm (UTC)As much as I would like to say it's because they're irrational and don't know any better, I assume it's because they've done some sort of analysis which shows that they wouldn't make enough money off of it. I have no idea how much the BBC is charging for the licensing rights, but I would imagine it's a lot. Given that in the States, Doctor Who was only shown on PBS, its ratings were never as high as those of shows on commercial television. And if bean counters at a cable network looks only at those ratings, plus the abysmal ratings of the abysmal 1996 Fox TV-movie, one can see how they might conclude that the audience for the show simply isn't big enough.
Mind you, I believe such an analysis would be flawed...but I don't work in TeeVee.
