M. and I saw Sin City yesterday, and both enjoyed it very much. Unlike Sky Captain, they combined the digital backgrounds with performances actually compelling to watch, and the selective use of color in the black-and-white milieu was striking. The ultraviolence was a bit much, but I had to agree with M. that it was so cartoony that it was a lot less disturbing than it could have been. And, Clive Owen, hmmm. I've enjoyed his acting, but this is the first time I've found him really compellingly attractive. *chelseagirl tries hard not to think about what that might say about her* Though of course M. had to nudge me whenever his accent slipped. Scary Elijah Wood, now there's a phrase I never thought I'd utter. Though, as I just mentioned to [livejournal.com profile] sbgrl, this also apparently qualifies to my husband as a "lighthearted romp," which, uh, concerns me a little. ;-)

Have I mentioned that my chapter is happening again? As in words on pages? I didn't bring The Toy with me to the library today, as I've got a stack of papers to grade and Moll Flanders to reread, but I'm envisioning having a draft of the final chapter to my advisors in the next couple of weeks. [And I absolutely positively did not just jinx myself.]

We have friends in town for World Horror, and are trying to figure out if we're going for a day ourselves or not (aka is it in the Austerity Budget?). I'm not terribly excited, though Harlan Ellison and Amber Benson both have talks scheduled on Saturday, so that could be fun. Perhaps I'll hit the library Saturday and send M. out to play with the fanboys.

Clive Owen sooooooo needs to be the next bond. Like I haven't been saying that enough lately.

They keep saying his accent's wrong; not tony enough or somefink. I'd like to hear M's take on that. Or yours. Or somebody's.

Since we've had Scottish Bonds and Irish Bonds and whatnot, does that matter? Besides, who's to say Owen can't do a "posh" accent. My house Londoner can sound like Hugh Grant if he wants to, and he's freaked me out by keeping it up for long periods of time.

Yeah, that was my thought. I mean, he is an actor. He probably can't really kill people with his bare hands, either, right?

I don't really care about the accent, I just think he has such a great presence.

Alas, we are megabroke at the moment, so I'm trying not to be too excited about it. Of course I'd love to see her. Mostly, I hope there's some way M. can see Harlan -- he's been so excited about this for so long. [The elephant in the room that I've been deliberately not talking about is that M. lost his job and we don't have much in the bank. He'll land something soon, but meantime, very scary.]

How much? $50 at the door. I'll buy, I'm getting a large refund. It'll be a belated wedding present!
