Apr. 11th, 2005 07:41 amCould Deadwood get any better? Things are really starting to play themselves out now. The arising of Swearingen from his sickbed was just what the town needed. What more proof that Wu understands English perfectly well than his clearly cracking up when Trixie disses, uh, the mayor/hotel owner (blanking on name). I guess I knew Alice Krige was doomed since her name wasn't in the opening credits, but wow. Mr. W is one really sick puppy. Maybe Joanie will go to Al for protection, since he's pretty much the only one who has the power to keep her safe. (At least, that scene where he was observing her from the balcony seemed to be telegraphing the possibility.) I hope he doesn't throw in with the Pinkerton bitca against Alma -- now that she's taking a more proactive role, she's bringing all kinds of new possibilities into the mix, and I'd hate to see them at odds, simply because Al almost always wins and I'd like to see the respectable widow with the big money and the out of wedlock pregnancy play a big stake in this town. Trixie rocks - trying to negotiate a marriage of convenience for Alma? Maybe Alma doesn't want it, but still . . . A little sad for Sol, though -- it kinda sounds like Al is encouraging Trixie in their liaison and it's so clear Sol loves her. Particularly since Bullock has started irritating me, Sol is the only Nice Boy left in camp and I want him to be happy. I adored him when he said to Seth, "and then we'd have to fight and then you'd have to mind the store while I was convalescing." And the schoolteacher arrived -- that means Deadwood has hit the point of no return. Civilization has arrived, and like Huck Finn, half of these guys had best light out for the territories -- if this wasn't the last one left.
Battlestar Galactica, watching 33 again, it really struck me how in for the count they are. (If the show is a rerun do I need to bother spoiler-protecting?) Just in case -- The decision is made too quickly, and way too conveniently for Baltar, but the notion that they just blew up the Olympic Carrier and all its inhabitants. That's pretty intense. On most shows (though clearly not Deadwood ;-) ) they'd have somehow at the last minute saved it, while a Cylon agent or convenient accident would have eliminated Baltar's "little problem." I also love that they're all so clearly worn down and, as queenofthorns has said, they look like crap. This ep. made me sit up and take notice -- the first time I watched, I'd just taped it for M. -- but really paying attention this time . . . Gotta say how much I love this show.
So, M. had a lovely weekend and got to spend lots of quality time with Harlan, which cheered him up a great deal. They all got stuck in an elevator for 40 minutes, and he got to witness one of Ellison's Legendary Moments, which involved many colorful threats to the hotel management. He was amazed at how unsympathetic I was to the elevator plight, but he's gonna get mileage out of this for years, so how sorry can I be for him? Sunday, I met up with them after my Worship and Music Committee meeting (behold the odd juxtapositions of my life) and we went for a late lunch, so I saw everyone without sacrificing any diss time, and all was well. (I even got a zinger in on Harlan, which considering mild-mannered me, was pretty damn good. And we sang that 20s era oldie "Ballin' the Jack" together in an overpriced midtown tourist deli.) As for the ram skull I saw it, but not *on* its owner. Apparently it was part of an, uh, witch doctor costume. Which Harlan generously tried to give some p.c. credentials by referring to as a "vodoun priest outfit," but eeee. This guy almost went to Batcave (?), whatever that Saturday night Goth night some of you go to is called, in the outfit, but, he tells me, felt too shy. For good reason, perhaps?
teenygozer, have you seen Our Mutual Friend Jon recently? He's lost a great deal of weight, even since Christmas -- very proud of him!

Date: 2005-04-11 02:18 pm (UTC)I haven't seen him for about a year, having missed him during the holidays (I was busying bugging-out, a la M*A*S*H*, having been served with an eviction notice the week before Xmas.) I knew he was exercising and on a modified Atkinsy-type diet, so had high hopes he was losing pounds.
I cannot conceive of being stuck in an elevator with Harlan for 40 minutes. The mind refuses to go there. Was Jon stuck in there, too? TOO FUNNY FOR WORDS!
What was the deli? Kaplans, which is overpriced, but the food is worth it, or Carnegie, which is truly over-priced and not worth it?

Date: 2005-04-11 08:57 pm (UTC)He'd already lost a bunch of weight at Christmas, but this was even more. It sounds like he's got a really committed exercise schedule, which is great.
He assures me he's not doing strict Atkins, but modified, which is good because Irene made herself very sick doing it.
This deli was Ben Something, I think. Across from the Carnegie. The food was waaaaay not worth it.
