Yay for M.'s new place of business. He's off today, but has to go in for a managers' meeting, so to make up for it, they told him that if I stop by afterwards, they'll treat us both to a meal.

Nice to see a new episode of Lost, finally. There've been so many reruns lately, I was expecting Gilligan to turn up anytime. The moral ambivalence of so many of the characters impresses me; this was definitely Sayid's week to shine, but uncovering more of Locke's layers is always a treat as well. Though I sometimes wonder if there's really a there there, or if they keep making him up as they go. Am I the only one nervous about Charlie finding out there's a several lifetimes supply of heroin present on the island? Couldn't they burn it or something? And yay Kate for knocking out the doctor -- the bags under his eyes were packed and ready to go.

The semester is nearly over and most of the papers won't come in 'til Monday (whence grading madness begins), so meanwhile life is very drift-y and I am reading Victorian legal theorists, which is just about as much fun as it sounds.

Yay for an employer that appreciates people who work on their day off! Yay for a free meal in a nice restaurant!

Boo for someone else getting sick and calling him in to cover the shift. *pout* I have permission to order consolation sushi, however.

Might you know off-hand of a nice general overview-starting point book on Victorian law? It's time to start the WC chapter, and I think asking people on the internet is the right way to do you research (I learned this from LJ and my students)!

evil *g* Sometimes one has to remind them there are such things as books. It's a strange concept for them.

Law and Society in England 1750-1950 by W. R. Cornish and G. de N. Clark

I got tired of renewing it from the Columbia law library and ordered my own from Amazon.co.uk

Awesome--thanks! Although FU has no copy (hello? *law* school?!) and there doesn't seem to be a copy for sale in the whole world, I *will* find and love this book. (after my snarky aside, I just realized that the law library is a different batabase--maybe they do have it--but I will still find and love it)

It's listed on amazon.co.uk with limited availability. There's also a Crime and Law in 19th Century Britain which might be more what you need -- W. R. Cornish is a co-author of that as well, and that's listed as normal availability.

Hmmm, I think I'll order that one later this summer so it can be waiting at the in-laws' when I get there and I can avoid paying uk postage this time . . .

I'm snagging FU's copy of the 19th C one tomorrow, but alas, no library copies of the other. I've put in "please notify me" requests at several places (that was amazon.uk's suggestion), so hopefully, one will turn up soon.

Thanks again! Everyone should have a Victorianist/lawyer on their f-list!
