You know how "Happy families are all alike; unhappy families are each unhappy in their own way"? (Or something closely approximating it . . . )

Happy LJ entries seem to be all alike. I still love my classes at Cooper Union. Lovely visit with Alister; so nice for M. to spend time with someone he's known for more than a year. And we may have made another transatlantic match: two of my friends were quite taken with him at the wedding, so we invited one out with us each night, and he and J. hit it off. We shall see.

How embarrassing is it to be in a yoga class filled with people neither younger nor fitter-looking than I am (in fact quite the opposite) and find that I'm the only one who can't hold downward facing dog for as long as the instructor wants us to. Now that I've got a teaching schedule, I've really got to stick to a gym schedule, and one filled with yoga and pilates mat classes, not just treadmill and a couple of handweights . . .

Haven't tried one of these in awhile; when I was growing up reading the book, I always kinda wanted to be her. Borrowed from [livejournal.com profile] lizyjn

Galadriel

Galadriel

If I were a character in The Lord of the Rings, I would be Galadriel, Elf, Queen of Lothlorien, wife of Celeborn and grandmother of Arwen.

In the movie, I am played by Cate Blanchett.

Who would you be?

Haven't posted in ages; now can't seem to stop. . .

So one of the things I am learning as a nearly-one-year married person is about marital squabbles. I contend it doesn't help that I had this apartment to myself for 11 years before having to share it (and in a sane real estate climate that alone would have been enough to send us looking for another place, but this is New York City and we have a deal, so it's not gonna happen anytime soon).

M. is a tad underemployed at present, tending bar, but we knew that coming to a new country he'd have to take a step backwards. Still, lately it's been getting to him, especially as the scheduling has been peculiar. Which has led to his being crankier than usual.

So this afternoon we had what felt like a pretty major fight to me. He left for work and I sat down to concentrate on making teaching notes for *The Odyssey*, and my friend Jen called. She asked why I sounded so upset and I told her.

It's good to have friends who've been married for ten years. After I told her about what we'd been fighting about (and the volume and tone), she made it clear that it didn't even rate as a squabble -- maybe in very low scale spat zone.

I love perspective.
