Did anyone watch iZombie last night? I managed to fall asleep in my comfy hotel room while watching -- I woke up an hour later in bed with my glasses still on my face. (Introvert paradise -- a hotel room all to myself . . . ) I'll watch On Demand when I get home, but meanwhile . . .

I watched because it was created by Rob Thomas of Veronica Mars fame, and I love VMars and am sad that I didn't get on board until after it was off the air. (Probably the way 80% of current Firefly fans feel -- hey, I watched *that* every week.)

The half of the episode I saw before falling asleep was oddly similar to VMars. Young woman who seems to have everything loses it all after a party gone wrong. OK, Veronica's situation was more complicated, what with her father losing his job as sheriff, her mother leaving, and Lily's murder, but . . . this is kind of the cartoonish version of the same. Veronica was roofied and raped; wakes up a social outcast. Liv turns down a designer drug that has unfortunate side effects, chaos ensues, and she wakes up a zombie.

The female lead, who was previously sweet and kind of the all-American girl, is now snarky and edgy. Long hair is now short blonde hair. Perfect boyfriend is now ex. She solves crimes!

And of course, Daran Norris (Cliff McCormack on VMars) was in it, though I fell asleep before I found out whether he did it.

I'll keep watching, though as of now, I'm afraid I'm going to feel like I'm watching Zombie AU Veronica Mars fanfic.

I did! The mystery wasn't the most exciting, but I did really like the characters and it had a fun vibe, I will keep watching

I think I would have fallen asleep even if it was the most exciting thing ever; having a hotel room and a bed to myself was just too enticing . . .

With any luck I'll get to watch over the weekend. Or maybe even Friday, as we're still on spring break.

I think it may have helped that I never watched Veronica Mars, so I had no unfortunate echoes of that show. I enjoyed it as yet another zombie origin story - zombies created by designer drugs is a new and original concept! And I like the idea of getting memories by eating the brains of the dead. I'm not in love with the teenage zombie angst, but I'm willing to give the show a try.

I wouldn't say unfortunate, as I probably would not have watched if it weren't for the VMars connection. It's just hard to live up to Most Awesome Thing Ever status (OK, Joss Whedon kept that ball in the air until it finally crashed with Dollhouse, but he's exceptional). Hopefully as the series progresses the similarities will get blurred by the development of the new characters and situations. If not, well-written Veronica Mars Zombie AU fic would not be the worst thing on TV. ;-)

It's interesting it scanned for you as teen angst, since Liv was a medical resident which means late 20s, but I think there's something about tv shows that makes characters revert to a certain stage . . .

Okay, young adult angst. :-) The actress has a very young look (she certainly doesn't look like late 20s to me!), and the zombie look makes her look like a teenaged goth. It's a good sign to me that they're starting the series off with her starting to get over her "OMG, I'm a zombie, my life is over!" angst. Even though, okay, her life IS over... but now she has an un-dead life to live, and it looks like she's starting to embrace that idea.

It's weird that although I watch ALL of the zombie shows, and the blood and gore don't usually bother me (I *know* it's all fake, after all) it really bothers me to see her eating identifiable bits of brains with her noodles. {shudder}

That is really sweet. Yeah, I'm a bit more grossed out by the current condition of the walkers on The Walking Dead. ;-)
They're really crumbling, huh?

I believe that Liv is meant to be 25, but yeah you can never tell with tv these days as looking early/mid 20's usually=teenager in tv terms *g*

That's really REALLY young for a medical resident in the US. (4 years of university followed by medical school before you do a residency.)

So in a story about a crime-fighting zombie medical resident, the thing that is bothering me about the realism level is that she's the wrong age. *laughs at self*

Hmm maybe she was meant to have fast-tracked some of it, I believe that she was meant to be a real type A prodigy before becoming a zombie?
