emergency preparedness

Within the past day, I have purchased:

2 pairs of wellington boots, one for each of us
1 new cat carrier, just in case
4 gallons of bottled water, plus I've been filling up empty bottles from our Brita jug
huge bag of dry cat food

We have located among our belongings:
lots of candles
a battery operated radio with lots of replacement batteries.

I am running to the grocery store in a few moments and I'll pop by again on my way back from my workspace later today.

I figure the more prepared we are, the better the chances are this will all be nothing . . .

Good luck chaps! It's all going a bit "Day after Tomorrow" right now, akin to leaving in a Devlin (and the other bloke) movie...ahh...Emmerich.

Joking aside, all these patterns with weather, social upheaval and the like are a bit scary.

Good theory! I've got food for all the critters and enough (I think, anyway) for me, especially because I have a tiny municipal utility and we've never been without power for more than maybe six hours (usually much less), even when others are without it literally for weeks. I have a couple of flats of bottled water and plenty of Diet Coke. Lots of flaslights, though I should check on batteries. And instead of going to the zoo today to take pictures, I'm going to try to get the books up high enough for safety. And move the vacuum cleaners upstairs, and the dehumidifier if I can carry it. Feh. And feh again. (Oh, and I already put the deck chairs in the garage.)

Good luck to us all!

Zombies next.

Yeah, we were saying some local tv station should clear its schedule and show The Day After Tomorrow -- at least 'til the power goes out . . .

Sounds like you're doing well.

Not according to this ludicrous article I just read about what to put in your emergency survival kit, which basically involves packing up an entire house (except the furniture) and then stuffing it in backpacks. It was pretty funny, really, once I realized how unrealistic it was.

We're going to be fine.

I bought Chef Boy-ar-dee canned ravioli. (On the grounds that we could eat it cold if the power went out, since it's already cooked.) This is either a) a sign of the apocalypse or b) a sufficient sacrifice to the gods. I didn't even know they still made such things . . .

You may never speak to me again after this admission, but...

I already have a bunch of that in the cupboard, because...I like it. ::runs and hides:: I also figure the fridge will hold its temp for a little while, so I've got cheese and braunschweiger and stuff to start with.

Sounds like you're off to a very good start. Good luck to you, M and the kitties!

Edited to add: Um, I like the mini ravioli. Haven't had it in awhile, but I do like it. ::ducks head::

I haven't had it since I was a child.

Yeah, cheese was about the only perishable I bought other than tonight's dinner, with similar reasoning.

Keeping my paws crossed for all of you! *hugs*

BTW, a staple in my currently lacking earthquake emergency supplies is Dinty Moore Beef Stew. Another that you can eat cold, and it's not bad at all.

*holds close*

Tinned corned beef would be in any UK emergency pack - do you have that? (M will be able to translate if not). Tinned tuna would do you or the cats - double good thing!!

But seriously - hope all goes well.

If it's possible to buy off a hurricane, I think it's a good use of funds!

[identity profile] chelseagirl.livejournal.com 2011-08-26 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's my "if I carry my umbrella I won't need it" logic . . . hope it works this time!

Good luck, sweetie! Back in 1999, there was some big hurricane headed for NYC and my office sent us home early, etc., and we ended up with a giant rainstorm. So hopefully that is what will happen this time too. Stay safe!

Is D. C. in the path?

I remember taping up my windows sometime in the 80s, and it was just heavy rain then, too. I'm hoping that the stocking in of supplies is one of those ritual behaviors that staves off the necessity of using them.

I haven't had it since childhood . . . I guess I'll find out whether I like it . . .

Thanks!

One tin of corned beef hash. Mostly tinned ravioli and such. Sardines which the cats will battle me over, no doubt.

I agree! Here's hoping for both of us.

Ah, I can relate, I'm a magical thinking kindagal myself...

Stay safe!

Best to you and SK for the duration!
