I do not want another platform; but I started a Pinterest, which is, by necessity picture oriented. I have one board for my current Edwardian Fashion obsession, another for Victorian/NeoVictorian/Steampunk images, another for current styles I like, and another just for random images I like (because I am a random person, right now it has several Leonardo drawings of children and cats, and photos of China Mieville and Elizabeth Hand from an article on writers' tattoos; I am sure it will get way more random).

Would a tumblr on Edwardian fashion be a good idea? I don't know if Pinterest loses images if the original host site takes them down, which makes me feel like I need to back them up. FB automatically friended me to everyone who has a Pinterest, and out of 27, only about 5 seem active. But most people I know on tumblr are doing either fandom or politics.

I confess I don't get Tumblr at all. It seems to be all pictures, at least what I've seen of it, yet people keep calling it a blog site. I like Pinterest, though. I keep trying to remember to use mine more.

Your feelings about tumblr match mine.* I haven't joined Pinterest as it seems so closely linked to Facebook and I haven't got the energy for that and Facebook.

*Though if you want pictures of hipsters, it seems to be ideal.

I note that the replies come from people who don't have them; I fear that the people who do, of whom I know there are a number on my flist here, aren't so much reading LJ anymore. ;-)

Oooh, report back on what you figure out. I set up a Pinterest but then I couldn't be arsed to keep it up and I found it way too commercial. But I don't quite grok why or how you set up a Tumblr. The ones I've perused seem to be short and tightly focused, but maybe people just don't link to the bad ones.

Since I'm mostly tagging pictures of clothes that were made 100+ years ago, I'm not so much worried about them being commercial. ;-)

I had no interest in it, since half the sites I see referenced seem to be "Eff yeah, this!" and "Eff yeah, that!" but since it seems to be the most photo-oriented of the sites, I wondered if it would be a useful place to put up my Edwardian pretty things.

So I'm way late on this (insomnia), but I thought I'd put in my 2 cents - I certainly find myself *checking* Tumblr more often than anything else, there's a whole lot of "there" there, from lovely pictures of everything from bands I like to fashion, and a great deal of social/political stuff (although it's very much not a great site for being able to follow intense conversations, the format isn't suited to a lot of scrolling, so it's easy to lose 'who-said-what', but the content is generally great). I still feel like I can't get the hang of pinterest, it feels like a vacuum where I'm pinning things I like, but it's less than intuitive to hunt up everybody else who has tastes in common and see what they're liking. I want to take the time to explore it more and see what I'm missing, but I guess that it boils down to my finding Tumblr more intuitive.

My big problem right now is that I originally set up my Tumblr as a business thing, so I'm leery of reblogging much of my 'fangirl' side, but it's easy enough to set up another that I'm just going to do that soon, and have MusesWell for the shop and something else for geeking out about all the things.

(I fully intend on trying my best to keep track of you everywhere, since we have so very much in common regarding our aesthetic tastes.) Also, I just picked up a bio of John Ruskin by Joan Asbe - do you know it? If so, how would you rate it?

I know so little about it, but it seems like tumblrs are more subject-based than "hey this is my account," at least for some people. I have such resistance to the constant multiplication of fora . . . however, it does sound like it's easier to find things by interest there. I would probably end up reblogging the same Edwardian fashion things I put on Pinterest, but I'm guessing there are other people doing similar things.

I haven't kept up on Ruskin scholarship recently, since my work has been going in different directions, but I recently read a fascinating essay on our contemporary need to demonize him because of his sexual limitations in a collection, Functions of Victorian Culture at the Present Time. I see this is from the 80s; I'm actually surprised I didn't read it during my Ruskin-obsessive phase in grad school -- I went on this mad search to get a complete Stones of Venice, which I do have in a lovely 3-volume, late 19th/early 20th c. edition. Let me know how it is -- and if it is non-demonizing.

Yes I bet there would be an audience for an Edwardian fashion Tumblr. I'd follow! The dreamy-looking pretty 19th century women on my Tumblr are fairly popular.

I'm quite surprised by how good my collection looks online. In real life the entire thing occupies one shoebox in my bedroom.
