Netflix cannot believe I am not interested in The Punisher. "But Catherine," it says, "you watched Jessica Jones four times, The Defenders twice, Luke Cage once, and both seasons of Daredevil. How can you not be interested?"

But instead, I am interested in Godless, which is being promo'ed as a feminist Western -- a tiny genre but one I am intrigued by. (Other than this and Strange Empire and that movie with Sharon Stone that I've not actually seen, are there others?) Plus, there is Michelle Dockery, still running as far and fast as she can from being Lady Mary, and Merrit Weaver, and Sam Waterston, and Scoot McNairy, and all of that is potentially squee-worthy.

Hint, Netflix. Anything from the Marvel Netflix Universe that I watched more than once had Jessica Jones in it. What does that tell you?

Hmm, I guess that explains why I had to give in to Wynonna Earp, finally. It's like someone put Jessica Jones and Buffy and a feminist Western in a blender. Even if it's cheesier than any of them, it's still got the elements.

Did you see the con artist show Dockery did? It looked like it would be really bleak.

I have not watched it. I just got the sense her agent sent it to her and she was like "Not Lady Mary! Let's do this!"

I liked the first episode of Godless a lot. It's definitely not something to binge watch, though -- it's a bit slow moving and requires close attention.

Netflix's algorithms are written by dudes who don't get. Hmm. That last part should be an acronym applied to all of Silicon Valley...

(I got what you were saying immediately. For me, of the main characters, both Jessica and Luke trigger my ABSOLUTELY! response. I love Claire best, probably, but I'm not wiling to sit through The Danny Rand show for her.)

I love Claire so very much, and I feel so guilty because I am a hopeless Jessica/Luke shipper even though Claire/Luke is so much more functional.

I did actually sit through the Danny Rand show for her. She and the few Jeri Hogarth bits made it survivable. Colleen Wing is not a bad character, but she thinks Danny is cool so her judgment is automatically unsound.

"Strange Empire" was supposedly not bad, but featured sexual assault pretty heavily, which is a reason for me to avoid shows (doesn't cover shows dedicated to rape /sexual assault recovery, see also JJ).

I do love Wynonna Earp. Yes, it's cheesy. But yes, it's got It.

I really liked Strange Empire a lot -- it was quite brutal, though -- I think all post-Deadwood Westerns are. I don't remember thinking it was so much sexual assault as generally violent and lots of deaths -- but I could see it could definitely be triggery.

Yes, I have totally given in to Wynonna . . . it wouldn't be the only cheesy thing I love to pieces, that's for certain.

I don't have Netflix, but Amazon's algorithm similarly still can't see the differences between classic, academic, progressive, and reactionary Catholic books. No, I'm not likely to ever buy anything by that author, so stop recommending his books...

A librarian or book shop clerk would instinctively know better!

I keep reminding my students that spellcheck is just an algorithm and is not proofreading for them -- I think they forget that it can't read.

Netflix did that to me with Santa Clarita Diet. It would NOT STOP showing me the ads. I don't even know why. I mean, I can see Netflix reasonably assuming that someone who watched all the other shows in the Defenders set would want to watch a new one in the same set. Why Netflix thinks a sitcom about cannibals resembles ANYTHING in my recent history beats the heck out of me.

I really wish there was a "don't show me this ad again" button.

I had no interest in the Punisher in Daredevil, and I retain my lack of interest. It makes sense that it showed me him a few times, but it persists rather than showing me other things . . . . also considering I watched their other "feminist Western" Strange Empire fairly recently (and Wynonna Earp, and something about the Pinkertons with a female detective prominently featured), the algorithm might have found me for the show I just did start watching!

It might have generalized to "gritty gunslinger dramas"? idk ...

But yeah, the Punisher was spectacularly uninteresting to me in S2 of Daredevil and I can't really imagine wanting to watch him in his own show. I wasn't into him in the comics and I'm not any more interested in the live-action version. I also seem to be one of the few people who didn't find his dynamic with Karen particularly compelling either, so the idea of getting more of that is just profoundly meh.

I do like Karen, but I like her in a friendship with Matt and Foggy. I am annoyed by her fascination with Frank Castle.

Yeah, exactly! It's not that I don't like Karen or find her interesting; it's just that I really couldn't care less about her obsession/friendship/attraction/whatever it is with Frank.

Oh, I love OitNB! Such a diverse cast of women and some great storytelling. I also watch Wentworth, which is an Australian women-in-prison drama.

It's entirely possible I watch too much television.
