Infinity War
Apr. 30th, 2018 05:23 amTook a study break, er, grading break on Saturday to go see Infinity Wars.
Here's what I thought, mostly regarding what happens in the next movie:
Tony either dies or passes along the mantle to Rhodey and goes off with Pepper to live his life. Um, yeah, he was probably doomed the minute he set a wedding date.
Cap dies because Chris Evans wants out and anyway he's done with his journey and nobody liked the Sharon Carter romance in the last movie.
Loki stays dead because enough is enough and Hiddleston is getting a lot of work now. Maybe he'll still get James Bond. Heimdall stays dead because Idris Elba gets to be the superhero now, or it's not worth his showing up.
Thor probably dies because who's left for him to interact with? And yeah, *adorable* with Rocket and Groot.
T'challa, Peter Parker, and the Guardians cast live because they are the next wave of Marvel movies.
Captain Marvel turns up and changes everything with her sheer awesomeness. Aka, oh, DC did one thing right with Wonder Woman. We need to get on that, says Marvel.
I found myself caring a lot about Vision and Wanda, but then, I'm teaching a class where a lot of students are writing about AI so I may be partial.
The Hulk is my least favorite Avenger, but Mark Ruffalo is my favorite of the actors. (Definitely the one who is the most my type.) So I was happy with a movie with a lot of Bruce and very little big green guy.
Peter Dinklage!! Perfect.
Who'm I kidding? My favorite Marvel heroine died of extreme old age back in the last Cap movie, and the remaining characters I care most about are in the Marvel Netflix Universe, so I am definitely on the sidelines. Though with big hopes for Captain Marvel.
Oh! And the friend I saw the movie with was really upset at the end. I couldn't understand why. Nobody dies, I said. Except a bunch of the original Avengers who are ready to move on to other things. Tony and Steve and possibly Thor. I don't know if you can kill the Hulk, but I vote for Bruce living happily ever after Hulk-free. Nat finally gets her Black Widow movie. And did anyone actually even notice Hawkeye wasn't there?

I mean, whether or not it was a good storytelling mechanism aside, I feel like the "rocks fall, everyone died" ending was just Marvel owning up to its true nature, i.e. a soap opera with just a lot more spandex. And no one stays dead in soap operas or comic book storylines. I had a little bit of a twinge of sadness for the "aw, it's the end of an era" feeling, but not at all for the characters themselves.

Date: 2018-04-30 05:05 pm (UTC)Quill is my favorite, so I was a little devastated that it was his own personal fault that Team Space couldn't get the gauntlet off (and consequently that half the population of the universe is now mulch in the wind) but on the other hand, it was completely in character, so can I really complain?

Date: 2018-05-01 12:11 am (UTC)Yeah, Quill is Quill, and always will be.
The permanent deaths will be in the next one, when the original class starts to move on. These had very little impact on me because I frankly don't believe in them . . .

Date: 2018-04-30 06:59 pm (UTC)I missed both Hawkeye and Ant Man and hope they get to be in the next one. I was grateful that their absence helped the pacing, though.

I'm easy.

I'm like you, I'm not really too worried about any of the deaths, but I felt bad for the kids in the audience. I think it would be tough on them to see their favourites die.
