Deadwood!!!!!
We say we got HBO again to watch the end of GoT. Yeah, whatevs. It was REALLY so we can watch the Deadwood reunion movie on May 31.
I love my profane, dark, wonderful Western. This is not the 19th century that was happening across the pond in the Victorian novels I specialized in for grad school, but it feels so profoundly true. (Though I'm happy to know that IRL, Seth and Martha Bullock were childhood sweethearts, because then at least their real life iterations were happy.) Also, more Ian McShane as Al Swearengen is just the best thing ever.
Veronica Mars!!!!!!
I did not watch it when it aired. My mistake. I ended up renting it from my neighborhood video store when that was still a thing and LOVED it and bought my own set of DVDs. I was a backer for the movie Kickstarter. I think I'm glad I was not actively in the fandom as I cannot fathom getting involved in an online debate on the high and low points of LoVe (and I adore the fact that Jason Dohring was Team Piz because he was well aware what an a-hole his own character was).
No matter. More Veronica. So excited. It looks like this limited series will follow the plot of The Ten Thousand Dollar Tan Line, one of the official VM novels which Rob Thomas co-wrote just after the movie, but hey, I read that when it first came out and don't remember the ending, so I'm good with it.
Westworld!!!!!
Well, the promo for s. 3, in which there will be very little West, and a whole lot of World, even if we're not getting it until 2020 sometime.
I had only seen s. 1, a few years back, and when we re-upped HBO, I binged s. 2. I want to rewatch the whole thing more slowly before we drop our subscription again. Representations of Artificial Intelligence, especially AI which achieves self-awareness, is very much my thing. I teach a class called "AI, Genetic Engineering, and Frankenstein," which is pretty much exactly what it says on the tin. We start the semester with Frankenstein as the text which defines many subsequent conversations, and then we have them. So mix that up with the deconstruction of the "Wild West" archetype in the narratives that played out in the park, and how the dawning consciousness of the hosts disrupted them, and I'm so there. I'm also a little in love with Jeffrey Wright, enjoyed looking at James Marsden's pretty blue eyes, and loved the variety of interesting female characters. (Definitely Team Maeve, and hope she's got a major role in the new season.) Looking forward to seeing what Aaron Paul brings to the mix, as well.

Date: 2019-05-22 02:23 pm (UTC)I'm excited for Westworld, too. I loved seasons 1-2, and they just get better on rewatch. I think I watched season 1 three times, and every time I watched an ep, I saw new things.
