Days of Firsts
Oct. 8th, 2019 06:11 amMy first NY ComicCon and my first reading that, um, wasn't a crowd entirely packed by my friends.
I don't do well in crowds and I was glad I had the educator pass to ComicCon, because it meant I could spend parts of days without feeling like I was wasting money. (Seriously discounted 4-day pass.) I went on Friday, was overwhelmed by the crowds. Ran into cosplayer Jay Justice at her booth; she was awesome and was also the only one who recognized that I was Stealth Carol. (Well, I wasn't so much as I was wearing my own jeans, boots, t-shirt & jacket with a SHIELD ballcap from Captain Marvel and a Captain Marvel logo necklace.) Bought stuff: a Frankenstein graphic novel with illustrations by Berni Wrightson, art of Bowie and of Carol, sterling silver Captain Marvel logo earrings and necklace by What's Your Passion jewelry. Can't wear the necklace yet, though, as have informed M it is my birthday present from M. Bought a lot of Captain Marvel because she was really the only one of my obsessions to be well-represented in all the acres and acres of dealers' rooms. Did see some of the Jessica Jones costumes on display.
Decided to get Marty a Christopher Eccleston autograph and glad I did -- he put out his hand for a shake, and saw the yellow sticky and asked if I was Marty. I explained it was for my partner who wasn't there; I thanked him for coming out about his eating disorders and depression and he said it was the most freeing thing he'd ever done. I mentioned M was bipolar and he sent his love. It was genuinely NICE.
Next day I went to Diana's panel on Fighting Fascism in Fandom; met up with another cosplaying friend there (he did a really nice Wolverine from Logan). Wandered around the Dealer's Room some more; met up with L & J and had a nice long chat with them outside semi-away from the din. Then found a diner, where I ate and read; went to Macy's to kill an hour, and went to the separate venue where the Wynonna Earp panel was held. Alas, no Tim Rozon (*sigh*), but the cast and creator were delightful. It was awesome to be at a panel about an action/fantasy show where everyone on it was a woman, the crowd was probably 80% female, and young, female & queer was the norm.
Read at Lady Jane's Salon, a romance/women's fiction reading series that's held at Madame X, a bar on the cusp of the Village and Nolita that looks like a bar called Madame X should. (Dark wood, lots of red, antiquey sort of bordello-ish.) I was on last and was mildly terrified -- so soon after my own launch only a few of my friends came, as expected. So my first reading to mostly strangers. Once I started reading, I was fine, and I got awwws and laughter at the right places. Didn't sell any books, but the one I put in the raffle was *not* the last claimed (yay!), and a number of folks did come up to me to talk afterwards, so I count it a significant win and part of my dues-paying.
