That Alphabet Meme
Aug. 29th, 2020 08:59 pmBecause I don't seem to post here often enough and maybe this will keep me talking for awhile.
A: Ships that you currently like a lot. (They don’t have to be OTPs because not everyone has OTPs.) Friendships, pairings, threesomes, etc. are allowed.
I am boring and predictable. John/Sara on The Alienist. (glares at screen). Wynonna/Doc on Wynonna Earp. (Yes, Wayhaught are awesome and I love them too. But I especially adore the dysfunction of this pairing. Plus Doc is so my type.) Deckerstar on Lucifer. (Or how to do a slow burn right.)
B: A pairing – platonic, romantic or sexual – that you initially didn’t consider, but someone changed your mind.
Wow. Hmmm. I usually see the chemistry -- romantic or friendship -- or I don't. The adorably enthusiastic Wynonna Earp fandom has definitely got me thinking more about Wynonna & Nicole's friendship.
C: A ship you have never liked and probably never will.
John/Violet on The Alienist. (glares at screen). I was less crazy about Buffy/Angel than a lot of folks; I definitely shipped Buffy/Spike before it was canon.
D: What was the first thing you ever contributed to a fandom?
So I wrote a Star Wars story about other Jedi, like long before there were extended universe novels and animated series and etc. And nobody cared. I was in high school and it was in a fanzine, where you didn't really expect much feedback. Just kind of ironic.
E: Have you added anything stupid/cracky/hilarious to your fandom, if so, what?
Alias Smith and Jones (once again my primary writing fandom) -- a friend and I wrote something called the Snarkathon that still gets hits and quoted over two decades later. The website she created is utterly adorable; it was state of the art in the 90s.
I guess that's enough for today.
F: What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom? What fandom was it?
G: What was your first fandom?
H: Do you prefer live action TV shows or animated TV shows?
I: Has online caused you to stop liking any fandoms, if so, which and why?
M: Name a character that you’d like to have for a friend.
N: Name three things you wish you saw more or in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice).
O: Choose a song at random, what ship does it remind you of?
P: Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas).
Q: A fandom you’ve abandoned and why.
R: Which friendship/platonic relationship is your favorite in fandom?
S: Show us an example of your personal headcanon.
T: Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending?
U: Three favorite characters from three different fandoms, and why they’re your favorites.
V: Which character do you relate to most?
W: A trope which you are virtually certain to hate in any fandom.
X: A trope which you are almost certain to love in any fandom
Y: What are your secondhand fandoms (i.e., fandoms you aren’t in personally but are tangentially familiar with because your friends/people on your dash are in them)?
Z: Just ramble about something fan-related, go go go!

Date: 2020-08-30 05:55 pm (UTC)Of course now I'm thinking of Alas Smith & Jones:

Date: 2020-08-30 10:43 pm (UTC)Not slash, because that would be way too easy, what with there being only two main characters and both being adorable and being obviously devoted to each other. Where's the conflict there? It was the one time I tried m/m slash, but I slashed Heyes with Big Jim Santana. And it was just kinda lifeless.
Nope, I did humor, I did adventure, and I wrote a really long post-amnesty series with lots of original characters which helped me make the transition to non-fanfic projects when people actually liked my original characters and wanted to know more about them. A few years ago, I resumed that series, having thought it was concluded about twenty years ago, and discovered that people had found them on an old website I'd half forgotten about, and were excited I was writing again. Which was a total surprise and delightful. I've pretty much wrapped it up, I think, though there's a once a year Advent Calendar challenge I'll definitely keep doing.

Date: 2020-08-30 11:17 pm (UTC)Despite Idris Elba's obvious charms, I was only really interested in Luther when Alice was on the scene. She brought a spark to things.
BTW, I did a sequel to that Alienist story (but not the Vienna Blood crossover, which I may still write) and interestingly it's been much slower in racking up views and kudos. I think the first one was just what people needed when they needed it, and they've already bounced away -- at least that's my guess.

Date: 2020-09-01 08:04 pm (UTC)I suspect that Alienist shippers of all varieties were pissed off about how the season ended - non-canon shippers still often have a way they'd prefer canon to go and there are quite a few John/Sara/Laszlo shippers as well. In other words, it wasn't just John/Sara shippers looking for fix-it fic and I'm a good example of that. :D In general, it's a tiny fandom fic-wise so there's just not much activity there in general.

Hmmm, the Vienna story might end up John/Sara/Laszlo. Since Karen is the murder victim, Laszlo's available. And the fact that John and Sara would drop everything and cross an ocean to go and help him implies an intense connection.

Date: 2020-09-06 12:08 pm (UTC)Yeah, I don't quite get that from Max myself -- sounds a little generic older man/younger man maybe? If I were to write that pairing (which, based on my one attempt at m/m slash I wouldn't wish on a recipient), I would see Max as taking the lead, much more aware of the ins and outs (so to speak) of the sexual impulse from his interest in Freud's work. And Oskar as the one who, now that his marriage has fallen apart and he's emerging from his grief, is beginning to wonder if there are other possibilities than the ones he's let himself consider in the past.
