Watching The Godfather, which I somehow had never seen before, but DVR'ed over the summer and never quite got around to. Between the cultural osmosis, and having watched all of The Sopranos (back then) and Peaky Blinders (just caught up), it's kind of anticlimactic.

I have also somehow never seen The Godfather. I keep meaning to, for cultural relevance!

I remember reading once that the author of the book on which the movie was based had said that if he'd known what would happen with his story (culturally), he would have written the book better. I do not know the context of the quotation, and I'm sure he wrote as well as he could at the time and in his circumstances, but the sentiment has really stuck with me. :-)

My first ex-husband, possibly due to being so much older than me and having taught film classes, felt that he needed to educate me on classic movies, so he made me watch that film. I loathed it. Come to that, I pretty much loathed everything he ever tried to "educate" me about. (He also made me watch A Clockwork Orange, among other things.)

Yeah, but it's still an awesome movie, no? Agree that the full impact of its novelty is lost by not seeing it in 1972. (Which I didn't, btw, because I was only 11.)
