Fannish Year End Meme, because why not?
Dec. 31st, 2020 07:39 pmYour main fandom this year? Probably The Alienist, which I loved except I didn’t love their whole bait-and-switch attitude towards a certain canon ‘ship. Wrote a few John/Sara fixit stories which, for me and my tiny fandoms, are doing quite well.
Your favorite film watched this year? I think I saw the new Little Women in the theater before we locked down, and I loved that a lot. And finally seeing Hamilton on Disney+ was way up there.
Your favorite book read this year? I enjoyed a lot, I’m not sure I loved anything unalloyedly. Piranesi by Susanna Clarke was not the book I expected from her, but it’s sticking with me in a really good way. I read a lot of historicals, some mysteries, some romances, some straight up epic-ish litfic, and liked most of them, but nothing is standing out. I think the trouble I’ve had concentrating since last February, when I was exhausted and had a bad cough that lasted for three weeks, and you know I’m wondering about that now, and then all through the pandemic, which affected my reading. More romances than usual; I think except for a couple of authors, that’s run its course for me.
Your favorite tv show of the year? Lucifer gave me such joy that I’ve watched it all the way through, twice. Honorable mention to the Snowpiercer tv show. I might be a little in love with Daveed Diggs, which "Puppy for Hannukah" definitely affirmed.
Your best new fandom discovery of the year? Definitely Lucifer. I read a bunch of Deckerstar fic over the spring and summer.
Your biggest fandom disappointment? The Alienist. Most of it was great, but they built up John/Sara so much, and then just pulled the rug out from under it, and moreover did that poorly and by doing something way too obvious. And at the end, all I could think was how awful John’s life was going to be.
Your tv boyfriend of the year? Doc Holliday on Wynonna Earp, bad judgement or not. ;-)
Your tv girlfriend of the year? Ella Lopez on Lucifer.
Your biggest squee moment of the year? The meta way that Snowpiercer turned the tables on a tv/movie commonplace. I’d recognized Mr. Wilford’s voice earlier in the season, when Melanie was playing with the recordings, so I was ready for it. Still, the payoff that I was waiting for was pretty great. Second biggest squee, a certain cameo at the end of season 2 of The Mandalorian. Also David & Patrick's wedding on Schitt's Creek, which I can't believe was actually this past year because it seems so many years ago . . . .
The most missed of your old fandoms? The one that inspired me to write reams of fiction in the 90s was Alias Smith and Jones, which I’m back in, now. Writing less in it than I was in 2017-2019, but still connecting with the friends I’ve made there.
The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to? Not sure I have that much energy for a new fandom right now. As far as viewing, I’d like to pick up The Expanse again.
