Skipping Days 9, 10 & 12.

Day 11: What would make you leave a fandom, or prevent you from getting into it in the first place?

I fall in love with a story or a world, for the most part, and when it's not capturing my imagination anymore, I start to drift. The thing that pushes me away is if the fandom is all about a particular pairing, and that's all anyone's interested in. If only part of the thing is of interest to me, that's not enough to draw me in. I like talking to people who have different favorite characters, different OTPs in the same fandom.

Day 13: Squicks - What are some things that squick you in fandom - not necessarily "icky", though it can be. From anything involving blood, to bad grammar.

As long as people are doing what makes them happy, that's cool. I just won't read it if it's not for me. I have to admit I don't "get" certain things, like mpreg or A/B/O, but if others are having fun with it, good for them.

HOWEVER, there are certain fanon conventions which drive me absolutely spare in a particular fandom, but which wouldn't make sense to anyone here. Oh, and too many cutesy stories about main characters when they were children. Once in awhile, sure, but please keep it to a minimum. "But that's not a squick?" you're saying. Fair enough.

This is new to me. Is it particularly characteristic of certain kinds of canons, perhaps ones where the main characters knew each other as children, or where multiple generations of a family are main characters?

Maybe it's just Alias Smith & Jones? About the two main characters in their childhoods. Lots of them and often too precious for me.

Although that fandom has traditionally been tolerant of original characters, and many of the characters I developed writing it have evolved into different roles in my non-fanfic stories, so I must give it credit for that. (There ARE only two characters who are in every episode, as they travel around, so you kind of have to have people for them to interact with.)

I am with you; I really prefer a variety of pairings and tropes and ideas rather than just one. I get bored reading the same pairing over and over.

Yes. I confess, some folks in the past have made me feel excluded because I didn't relate to a fandom primarily through their pairing (often but not always an m/m one), but I just liked the variety and seeing how different folks interpreted things.

Absolutely. I have four stories I've written for The Alienist -- three different pairings. Two m/f pairings, one book & TV canon, the other TV canon. One m/m pairing, very fandom-popular. I really need to write the fandoms favorite OT3!
