Day 14: What fandom broke your heart?

Sleepy Hollow. A lot of this was the showrunners' fault -- the way they brought in fantastic people and then got rid of them (John Cho, Orlando Jones) and the way they treated Nicole Beharrie. The incredibly inconsistent way they wrote Katrina. The way the whole thing was basically one season of brilliance and then the remainder of a series of missed opportunities (which I stuck with far longer than I should have done).

I thought Ichabod and Abbie should end up together, but also that Ichabod and Katrina needed to be worked through first, because there was still real love there. And there were so many ways they could have done that well, but they found the worst possible way to do it horribly badly. And then when Katrina was gone there was still no Ichabod/Abbie. So that's on the showrunners. But people, especially on Tumblr, started namecalling, and I went from "wow, finally after a long hiatus, a show I want to fic!" to "putting this down and backing away slowly."

I was only ever observing from the outside, but I remember how toxic that fandom got. It's such a shame.

Oh yeah, same. I went from INTENSELY into that show, to serious nope by idk, half way through season two? A LOT of that was about how they treated Katrina, who was supposed to this amazing smart talented witch and just had the idiot ball chained to her 95% of the time. I didn't care who ended up with who, but writing that bad was a bad sign.

I wrote Katrina/Jenny fixit fic at one point, trying to salvage the early season two plot, and then just gave up. There were so many things to fix that there wasn't even a point any more.

I loved that first season so much and then... yeah.

Yeah, that show was so delightful and then it jumped off the shit cliff.

You may like Dickinson, which is on Apple+ -- yeah, I have no idea what they charge for it, but it's excellent. I belatedly finished season 2 yesterday and it gave me all the feels. Plus gorgeous costumes and interiors.

The first season of Sleepy Hollow was, I think, the last show that I made sure to be home from work to see in real time as it aired (back when that was still a thing). I enjoyed it and its potential so much.

First season.
