Is anyone watching the current season of The Handmaid's Tale? Does anyone want to talk about what the hell just happened?

Cut for spoilers.

No, really.

You don't want to see this, unless.

OK.

I am just glad that we didn't end up with yet another "June must stay to rescue Hannah" season and we had some solid time in Canada.

So in many ways, the whole Maenad-like Particution, straight out of the rituals the Handmaids were forced to participate in while they were in Gilead, was brilliant. And who deserved it more than Waterford? Except, other than Emily, who were these women? The ones who'd JUST been traded to Canada? Others in the encounter group Moira was trying to run?

I was really hoping that June and Luke would make it, because then Gilead wouldn't have won, not entirely. But when June looked at Luke and Moira and Nicole through the window, it was clear she was seeing them as a family, and one she couldn't be a part of, because she's in such a different place with trauma. Somehow they are more innocent than she is?
Not innocent in "not-guilty" but innocent in still being able to be who they were, before Gilead, more or less. And even though Luke and Moira are not sexually together, they really are a couple in so many ways -- if Luke tries to move on from June now, if Moira gets back together with that last woman or meets a new one, they are very much going to be sharing their romantic partner with this platonic partner.

I get why Luke's trauma is more limited -- as a man, and as someone who escaped Gilead early on, he hasn't been through the worst of it. He's mostly been waiting on the sidelines, largely powerless and hoping for his beloved to make it through -- actually like most female characters until fairly recently, come to think of it. But Moira was a Handmaid, for a time, and then she was in Jezebel's where she might have had an illusion of agency, but was still forced to have sex with many men. Why is she in such a different place emotionally? Sure she got out years earlier, but she was still raped a lot. Is she just a stronger person? Or why is she better able to bounce back? (I have a crush on Samira Wiley so I am Team Moira no matter what.)

Also, a lot of the online stuff I read is June/Nick shippers, and I get that Nick is a very pretty man (although Luke is quite attractive too), but . . . he's the head of the Eyes. He's very much invested in the Gilead power structure. Just because he loves June does not change that. How much is he playing both sides? What are his true beliefs? I really don't trust him; I'd love to think he's a full-on double agent, not just an "anything for June" kinda guy. But I'm waiting for it.

And am I still waiting for Aunt Lydia to become the Aunt Lydia from The Testaments. Will that happen next season?

What the hell is going to happen with June now? I did love that she switched from a gray coat to a red one in those final scenes -- taking back the color and making it powerful.

I noped out of the show after like the first season but I loved The Testaments and am WAITING for that Aunt Lydia. (Or I think they're also adapting the Testaments? IDK.)

It's interesting both this show and the movie adaptation (QUITE a while ago now) both killed off the Commander, altho June had help in the show. Atwood did the movie adaptation, and I think she was influenced by a lot of criticism that June was too passive in the book -- people REALLY wanted the guy to pay for his crimes and for her to be the one to do it. June in the show is such a different character by now!

I'm rewatching from the beginning, because I stopped partway through s3. Now in S2 and getting caught up, though I am pretty spoiled because of all the promos that keep coming up. Still looking forward to watching it all!
