Jun. 7th, 2003 03:11 pmFeeling a bit blue -- extended rain, M. taking more weekend shifts (handy as the money is), working at home is really cool in a lot of ways but I start feeling isolated. Time to email my study buddy and to call some friends to say I've now *officially* returned to the land of the post-wedding post-semester living.
Musing about my latest fannish obsession -- anytime I get interested in something, I find myself weighing the pros and cons of even trying to get involved. Signed up on some lists (web only, since I feel guilty about barely skimming half the lists I'm on), and of course the most interesting one is very slow (I think they've all moved over here to LJ, but I feel awkward about just imposing myself on a near stranger's journal). It's not like I have any time for it, and this is the first time I've felt strongly enough about something in a long while to even think about pursuing it. Or possibly even committing fanfic. And none of these people know me, so there's that whole building credibility thing all over again. Unsure whether to pursue -- maybe by the time I get through my next project, I'll be all possessed by working on the diss again, which is the wiser move. But oh is it fun having plotbunnies dancing in my head once again.
Whatever. Anyway, first Liberty game of the summer last Sunday and I never posted about it. I did miss them. And am oddly pleased that the Washington Mystics have players named Aiysha Smith *and* Asjha Jones.

Date: 2003-06-08 09:53 pm (UTC)Oh, and what exactly is a Liberty game? Women's basketball, I'm guessing, but that's only a guess based on the players' names.

Date: 2003-06-11 08:17 am (UTC)WNBA -- my friend Robin and I have been going to games pretty regularly for -- four? -- years now. I'm not terribly interested in sports, but there's something that makes me very happy about watching the Liberty -- hearing little girls and boys cheer for women players; hearing "sports guys" yell out female names. (This was particularly cool when we had a player named Venus.) And of course I've discovered that when you actually follow a team; when the players' names mean something to you and you know who the rivals are and etc., then there's something of a narrative thread to it.

Date: 2003-06-15 10:16 am (UTC)A narrative thread in sports. That's something I've never thought about. Then again, I've never really followed a team like that. I suppose the Toronto Blue Jays were the closest, but I was only an occasional follower.

Date: 2003-06-15 04:08 pm (UTC)OTOH, I recently read a story where the writer slashed Elrond and Celeborn, without ever mentioning (or perhaps knowing) that she was describing father-in-law/son-in-law sex. Elrond/Glorfindel, OTOH, I can buy . . .
re. the Liberty: I never thought I would be this engaged with a sports team, trust me. It also helps that Robin makes the effort to keep up with what's going on with the team/league, so she fills me in on quite a lot.
