Not only was it not scary being a panelist in freeform discussions, it was outright fun, and I hope they'll ask me again. :-)
Sarah and I arrived the evening before; not much going on except that we ran into some people; heard a (mixed quality) rendition of selections from "Once More With Feeling" at the opening ceremonies; and I bought a book on Tolkien's languages as part of M.'s birthday present. Karen met us there later -- we decided to hang out in the room and not go down to the con dance. Anyway, I was so out of touch this spring that it was great just to catch up and hang out.
The panels: *Rebel with a Cause* -- we talked about growing up on the show and particularly the metaphors of the high school years; as well as the mixed success of later seasons. *Consensual Sexual Violence* -- the other panelists outed themselves as sm practitioners and as I'd thought, I was put on the panel bc of my expressed interest in feminist and gender theory. At the outset, all I could think about in the context was the season 6 Buffy/Spike relationship, but as we talked, it opened up more and more and sexual violence of various types, consensual and non-, is all over the show in ways I'd never consciously pulled together. *The Earth is Doomed--Again* -- why do people stay in Sunnydale anyway (at least until partway through season 7)? This one veered a little too much towards real life (why did people stay in NYC after 9/11?) but as a whole was a satisfying discussion and some great audience interaction.
Robin Sachs was a terrific guest -- very funny (he started an ongoing gag about not being invited to the Buffy farewell party) and engaging (he kept up the energy in a 2 hour Q&A!) and anyway I felt special because he kept picking on me.
We took off after that -- Saturday evening -- and that was nice too, to do a con and still have weekend left to oneself. Or in this case, since M. was actually off Saturday night for a change, to ourselves, which was even better.
