Sep. 26th, 2003 04:07 pmI just wrote an extended precis of my proposed Alice in Wonderland course for next semester, to send to a friend in the department who's going to look it over before I present it to the acting dean. Infuriatingly, someone else is offering to teach two different seminars on that level, because "it will help her on the job market" --grrrr. I may be a year further away from the job market, but it's unfair if I can't have a shot at *finally* teaching a course in my field, after endless surveys and composition courses, and cheerfully teaching ancient lit and 20th century lit and whatever's needed.
Now that I've given a lovingly detailed unit-by-unit summary of everything we'd address in the course, I find it will break my heart if I don't have the chance to teach it.
But, oh, how exciting if I can!!!

I hope you get to teach it. When will you find out?

Date: 2003-09-26 01:37 pm (UTC)I'm all for both of us getting one course. She wants to repeat one she taught last year and teach one new one -- I figure she should get the new one because the other is already on her resume; but let me have mine! Especially since some of my writing center students last year said they thought it would be a really cool course -- I really do think it's something students would enjoy.
BTW, just dropped a message basically for you to our mutual list. :-)

Date: 2003-09-27 06:58 am (UTC)Not at Cooper Union, which by light of it's being a unique tuition-free institution, allows only its full-time students to take classes there. (It was founded by a philanthropist in the mid-19th c. and is a strange and wonderful place.)
But if this course goes well, maybe I'll get to teach it again at the New School or someplace nice and continuing-education-y like that. :-)
psssst...
Date: 2003-09-27 01:35 pm (UTC)Seriously though I hope you do get to teach the course. Frankly, when you mentioned the idea previously I was ready to sign up :-) If you DO end up teaching it, I hope we'll hear more along the way.

Date: 2003-09-28 08:50 am (UTC)If I get to teach it, I'll keep a teaching journal. That would be cool.
If enough people say they want to take it, I am going to save the emails (and get people who've told me in conversation to email it!) and approach New School for next year!!
