Great news, which I forgot to post a few days ago -- M. has recieved a notice from the INS and has an appointing for fingerprinting and "biometrics" on January 13th. On the same day, I received a "notice of receipt" -- date of receipt 14 months before date of notice. But things are moving ahead, no matter how slowly.

Survived the semester. Have to pick up a few late papers on Thursday, but mostly it's done. I liked my courses and my students (despite which, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] wonderlandkat for being the only brave soul to kindly acknowledge my rant of the other day).

We saw *Last Samurai* a few nights ago -- I enjoyed the spectacle of it while I was watching, but afterwards it felt like just one more of those "token white guy as main character" movies Hollywood loves to make. (You know -- token white guy fights apartheid, token white guy fights the KKK, token white guy dances with wolves . . . ) I did like the character and actor of the Japanese warlord (who, among his many other merits, was *not* Tom Cruise), but it really bothered me that the representative of all that was traditional looks like he'd had the surgery to make his eyelids more Western. From now on I'll stay with Kurosawa.

ROTK countdown -- 13 hours -- one faculty party and a night's sleep away!

wow, I get my name mentioned and everything!

I was just going to say, if you can find a copy of Marie Claire from last month, there's a huge article about how Cruise "exemplifies the principles of bushido". It's a scream.

literally

We did the whole INS thing, although we did it from abroad (Japan) and although it was stressful, for us (pre 9/11) it was pretty much a slam-dunk. Unless you come from some country that our gov't currently doesn't like, I bet it still will be much a question of having all the right stamps and papers filed. Good luck!

M. is a Brit, so it's as close to a rubber-stamp immigration as you can get. ;-) It's just taking so looooong in the post 9/11 world; we're hoping to have him cleared to travel to the UK for a visit this summer but still really up in the air about whether it'll happen by then. Plus a friend who's Canadian and has been dealing with the INS for years now keeps telling us encourage stories about their tendency to lose things. *fingers crossed* Glad it was easy for you guys, though -- always encouraging to hear about good experiences!
