that wasn't supposed to happen . . .
Jan. 26th, 2004 07:35 amOkay, it's the Golden Globes, not the Oscars, but still . . .
The Office *and* Ricky Gervaise!
LOTR *and* Peter Jackson!
Lost in Translation!
And Sean Penn's extraordinary performance in Mystic River . . .
The stuff I'm rooting for *never* wins.

Date: 2004-01-26 10:04 am (UTC)Radio 4 was talking about this last week and today. Last week, they claimed the best American adaption of a British show was back with All in the Family. True. Coupling sucked, I hear. And Men Behaving Badly was awful. And Queer as Folk just wasn't as queer as folk.
But I have hope for American TV. There's still Angel. :) And Dead Like Me and Six Feet Under. :)

Date: 2004-01-27 07:58 am (UTC)TV-wise, Americans just aren't good at the things the British are good at; they should import British stuff instead of remaking it -- it's not like we can't understand the accents, and certainly the British have to listen to enough American accents on their tv sets and movie theaters . . .
At least Roseanne never managed to remake AbFab, starring Carrie Fisher, as was threatened. Not that the latest AbFabs haven't managed to suck all by themselves, but . . .
BBC-America used to be clever and show the same ep. of the British Coupling right after the network showed it. They were working from the same scripts, but somehow the American cast just couldn't make them funny. I used to beg M. to be let off from watching the American version, but he really enjoyed slagging it off too much, and I did get the amusement.
There's a new season of the Sopranos coming soon. For that, American tv is forgiven. And Angel is getting really good again (frankly, I watched the third season and the first 2/3 of the fourth season out of loyalty more than anything), and though 24 is progressively less exciting each season it still has me eager to tune in. I haven't seen Dead Like Me or Six Feet Under because they're pay cable; I only got HBO for season four of the Sopranos since I'd seen all the rest on dvd and didn't want to wait while everyone else got to see it!
